Skye Home Watch of Hollywood, FL, earns third-year accreditation from the NHWA!
Shortly after moving into a condo complex in Florida in 2013, owners Seth and Jennifer Abels began to wonder about all the shuttered windows overlooking the pool. They realized countless snowbirds owned seasonal properties, leaving them vacant for months at a time. People would simply board them up for the summer and hope for the best. Seth and Jennifer knew many people who had second homes in Florida but had never really given any thought to what those people did when they were not using their vacation homes. They soon found out the answer when they were contacted by friends and family, all asking for a favor: to “swing by” and check the mail, the A/C, the roof, and of course to go through the hurricane preparation routine every time a big storm threatened to hit the area. Demand grew as people began to realize how seriously Seth and Jennifer took their responsibilities. Eventually, they decided to convert what they were already doing into a formal business, officially opening Skye Home Watch in 2017.
Seth is from California; he moved to Canada in 1996 to marry Jennifer, a born-and-bred Canadian. They spent the next 17 years raising their family there. By 2013, Seth finally had enough of the snow. With a degree in Political Science and 20 years in management, he had served in various management positions at several international companies. The most rewarding one was director of operations for a large school in Broward County. There, Seth gained knowledge and experience in property management, understanding how buildings function, the challenges of faulty air-conditioning, and the importance of hurricane preparation. He spent a year at a real-estate investment company, traveling on-site to potential investment properties, meeting with home inspectors, and learning what to look for and what to watch out for in unoccupied homes. Seth has earned the designation of NHWA Certified Home Watch Professional. The CHWP designation shows his commitment to providing excellent service to his clients.
As a Certified Gemologist with a degree in Diamond Grading, Jennifer has an eye for imperfections. She pays attention to detail at every property to make sure nothing is amiss. Having raised three boys, Jennifer knows that ignoring a little problem now can turn into a big, expensive headache later, and she is determined to identify potential issues before they develop. She has been working in sales and customer service for over 20 years and speaks fluent French.
A little about the National Home Watch Association: The NHWA was formed in 2009 in order to establish and maintain the highest industry standards for Home Watch and absentee homeowner services throughout the United States and Canada (www.nationalhomewatchassociation.org).
